Dr. Cowan worked as a lecturer at Roehampton University and at UCL Institute of Education across B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. levels. He specializes in the History of Education, Inclusive Education and Education Research. He was recently co-author of 'A Social History of Educational Studies and Research,' with Professor Gary McCulloch and published by Routledge. This was awarded Book of the Year for 2019 by the Society for Education Studies. During several years teaching Chinese students and visiting schools and universities, he came to appreciate aspects relating to the education sector in China. Dr. Cowan worked closely with many Master and doctoral Level Chinese students in the Uk and China and continues to do so. He was lead editor and author for 'New Directions for Education Studies in China' which was published in 2015 by UCL Institute of Education Press, working with a group of Doctoral Students then studying at the Institute of Education. Dr. Cowan also taught at Nizwa University in Oman, and produced a study of child labourers in Haryana Province in India. He is currently writing a book about the History of Chinese Studies in British Universities co-authored with Dr. Jin Tinghe of the University of East Anglia.
